The AC Cobra 289 was built from 1963 to 1965.

The 289, the most traded version: The 289 Cobra perfected Shelby's formula, becoming the most successful variant of the breed. Ford's 289-cubic-inch small-block delivered 271 horsepower in a package that retained the original Ace's elegant proportions while adding genuine supercar performance. With 580 examples built, it's the most common Cobra—though still extraordinarily rare by any standard. The 289's lighter weight compared to the later 427 created better balance and more manageable handling characteristics. Competition success was immediate and sustained, with 289 Cobras dominating both American and European racing. Street versions offered civilized performance that could be enjoyed daily, unlike their more brutal big-block successors. Today, 289 Cobras represent the sweet spot of the Cobra range, combining accessibility with legendary performance and racing heritage.
